The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
