The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
