Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
